Willmott Dixon has been appointed main contractor for Sheffield City Council鈥檚 拢14.4m Event Central project, which will transform a former retail building on Fargate into a music venue and workspace.
The project involves substantial structural alterations to create a new atrium spanning from ground to first floor, strengthening works to accommodate revised loadings, fa莽ade reimagining, and complete fit-out of both music venue and workspace elements.
Work was orginally meant to have begun in January this year but is now scheduled to start by the end of August.
The transformed venue will have a 200-capacity live event space and caf茅/bar area on the ground floor, plus four upper floors for co-working space and meeting rooms. It is expected that the venue will host community events, exhibitions, workshops and talks.
The project represents a significant investment in Sheffield's city centre regeneration, building on the success of venues like Cambridge Street Collective and Leah's Yard.
Chris Yates, Yorkshire director at Willmott Dixon, said: "Our local team of regeneration experts bring a wealth of experience to Event Central and we're delighted to play our part in the regeneration of Fargate, creating a space designed to empower this city's boundless creativity.鈥
